EXCERPT: Pulling the Dragon's Tail from Shifting Sands anthology

Shifting Sands anthologyAvailable now from MLR Press
Pairing: m/m
Available in ebook from MLR Press
Coming soon in print
ANTHOLOGY BLURB
The wrath of a woman scorned is bad, but a witch's wrath is hell on earth. No one knows this better than the six men of Shifting Sands Ranch. When the owner's witch of a wife flees the ranch, she takes with her one of the cowboys and leaves behind a curse that dooms the remaining inhabitants to a life that is anything but normal. Now, every month when the moon comes full, each man takes on the form of an animal.
Witches, shifters and ancient curses, such is life on the Shifting Sands.
STORY BLURB
Daniel's watched the other men who live on his ranch find their lifemates one by one. He's watched them all fall prey to the curse of the Shifting Sands. His curse. His fault. When it's suggested that maybe the curse will break once all the men of the Sands find their mates, Daniel -- as the only one left -- knows that it's time to acknowledge what he's known all along.
Russell's been in love with Daniel as long as he can remember. So why did he run off with Daniel's wife? She's a witch, that's why! Of course, now that it's happened, how can he explain himself and hope to be believed?

Daniel parked on the street not far from the main entrance of the small apartment complex. Although he knew the address well, he’d never been there before. Never been to Barston. But Russell was nearby. He could feel it.
Shutting off the truck, Daniel remained seated for a few moments, staring at his hands, waiting for the claws and the iridescent green and blue scales to retreat. Being so far away from the Sands was more unsettling than he’d thought. The farther he drove from his home base, the more the beast wanted to come out. He’d finally allowed the claws and the scales to remain, that little bit seeming to satisfy the dragon for a little while. But he was having a devil of a time keeping his eyes human. His sight kept slipping into that strange shape-sensory sight of the beast rather than normal vision. Not the easiest to drive with since the beast wasn’t great at seeing electrical stuff, like traffic lights.
“Damn!” it wasn’t working. The black claws and shining scales were still there although the shape of his hands remained mostly human. A weird afterimage to his sight told him that his eyes were half gone. Was this because he was so far from the Sands or was it because he was near Russell? Did it have anything to do with a nagging feeling that he had to get out of the truck now?
No help for it. Carefully tugging the cuffs of his flannel shirt as far over his hands as possible, he grabbed his hat and got out of the truck. Luckily, it was a dark night so he might be able to go undetected, at least to Russell’s apartment. He’d have to tackle the problem of what to do in the morning, when and if that trouble came.
Something was wrong. The feeling only increased. A definite pull guided him down the street away from the front door of the apartment complex. He shoved his hat onto his head and scowled at the door. That was where he wanted to go. But there was no denying the beast’s instincts when they were like this and the beast wanted to go down the street. Daniel jumped from the truck, hoping he’d parked in a parking zone, barely remembering to push the button on the key fob that’d lock the door. He forced himself to walk, although at a fast clip, toward the source of anxiety.
He heard them before he got to the corner of an alley between two buildings. An animal growl sank into his skin, shifting his vision completely to shapes and pushing his own anger to the surface. He curled his talons into palms that’d developed the thickly calloused pads of the beast. A curl of smoke drifted from his nostrils as he rounded the corner.
Four men. One on the ground to the side, clutching his arm and crying out. He smelled of blood. One standing a few paces away, staring at the remaining two, who were locked together. Russell was one of the two. He stood out as a shining orange-gold beacon despite the fact Daniel’s beast had never seen him firsthand. He was wrapped around the other, bigger man, teeth sunk into the meat of the man’s neck, one malformed hand gripping the man’s chest. Claws dug into the man’s skin. Daniel knew a partial shift when he saw one, having coaxed his men through a few of them over the past two years.
Instinct kicked in. “Russell!” he barked, putting a little of the dragon’s musical tone in his voice. It often worked to stun others.
Russell startled, lifting his head. Daniel saw the blood in his mouth as violet fluid running down the orange contours that made up his face. His victim sagged in his grip but Russell barely noticed him, turning toward the sound of Daniel’s voice.
Daniel strode purposely toward the men. The one on the ground scrambled to his feet, leaning up against the wall. He was a mixture of reds and blues through to violets to Daniel, strangely detailed enough that Daniel knew he was gaping in shock. The unharmed man turned to face Daniel, his shapes made up of murky reds and ugly greens, but his angry scowl drained from his face at whatever he saw. Daniel grimaced, wondering if his beard was all white yet, and how many scales shone on his skin. He knew his eyes had to be shining gold if he was seeing in emotional shapes. Had the horns sprouted from his head yet?
Daniel dismissed them all, including the injured man in Russell’s grasp. He concentrated on Russell, seeing the tiger on the verge of bursting forth. That answered the question about the twelfth animal easily enough. “Russell, let him go.”
The younger man’s lip curled up in a snarl. It was far enough from the full moon that the fever shouldn’t take him this hard, but who knew what Russell was suffering with such an extended absence from the Sands?
“Russell!” Daniel put all the command that he knew in his voice. “Do as I say.”
Russell’s grip faltered, allowing the injured man to drop from his grasp. His mouth fell open, the shape of his fangs clear in the opening. “Daniel?”
“It’s me, Russell.”
“What the fuck is going on?” the only uninjured man demanded. He stepped toward Daniel, the stink of fear belying his bravado. “Who the hell are you?”
Daniel grabbed the wrist of the hand that shot out in what might have been a good right hook. Although the man’s arm was larger than his, it stopped dead. Angry, Daniel let the man have the full brunt of his gaze, his claws just biting into the other man’s skin. “Get. Out. Of. Here.” He enunciated properly, letting the beast’s angry growl seep from his lips.
All of the man’s courage drained from the face before him and the pungent stink of fresh urine overlay the old urine smell of the alley. “W-what the fuck are you?”
“Nothing you’ll want to remember tomorrow.” Daniel shoved the man’s arm away. “Take your friends and go.”
Disregarding the men, he turned his head back to face Russell, who hadn’t moved. They stared at each other, frozen, as the three men scrambled from the alley. Russell leaned heavily against the stucco wall, knees bent, panting. Daniel’s strange vision showed him a superimposition of the tiger barely below the surface of Russell’s skin. How long had he been like that, so close to changing?
“We have to go,” Daniel said softly, once he heard the other men’s truck speed down the street.
Russell didn’t move except for breathing, and the wet tongue that slowly snaked out to lap at his lower lip.
Daniel tracked the progress of that wet muscle, trying to ignore what the sight did to fill his cock. He took a step toward the younger man, holding out his hand.
Russell’s gaze snapped down, widened. “Daniel?” No doubt he saw the scales and the claws. How much showed on Daniel’s face?
The beast demanded that he pounce, that he change so he could wrap his serpentine body around Russell to get the most skin-to-scale contact possible. But the human in him prevailed. He needed to take this slow or else he’d literally have an out-of-control tiger on his hands. Daniel spread both hands, palms toward Russell. He could take the cat, if necessary, but he’d much rather not. “It’s me, Russell.” He took another step. “Trust your instincts.”
A fine tremor shook Russell’s body. The claws he still sported dug shallow furrows in the bricks at his back. His own beast’s fine instincts spilled scales down his shoulders, neck, back and arms a split second before Russell launched from the wall at Daniel. Instinct again had Daniel catching him rather than using his own claws to slice open his belly. The smaller man slammed into him, arms snaking around him. Daniel did some arm-wrapping of his own, angling his head to meet Russell mouth-to-mouth just as tiger claws shredded the back of his shirt and scraped over the scales that covered his back.

He followed Izzy up the porch and into the darkened house but felt oddly reluctant to head to his room. He’d been having a good time with Izzy.

“Want a snack?” Izzy stood, just a silhouette in the entrance to the kitchen, backlit by the moonlight from the bay window.

Given an excuse, Rabin decided it was just that. “Nah. I think I’m just going to head on up to bed.” Bed. The word had a charge to it that made him look away. Even if he was feeling attraction -- and that’s probably what it was, strangely enough -- he wasn’t going to do anything about it. It was a weird night. One that should end before anything happened. “’Night.”

“’Night.”

(Original Blog Post: http://www.jetmykles.com/2010/08/sneak-peek-indigo-knights-squire/)
No cover yet and still working on edits (although I think they might be done now), but here's a sneaky peek at Squire.

This isn't a long excerpt, just a quick look at when Rabin meets Izzy. And, yes, Brent would be Heaven Sent's Brent Rose.

When Rabin finally found the gate with the number Brent had given him, he was fairly bouncing with excitement. This place was fucking unreal. He leaned out his window to press a button on a pad mounted in front of the gate.

"Hey, Rabin." Brent's voice was crystal clear.

"How'd you know it's me?"

EXCERPT - Bye Bye Skyler (AMP)

(Original Blog Post: http://www.jetmykles.com/2010/08/excerpt-bye-bye-skyler-amp/)
Bye Bye SkylerReleased August 12, 2010 from Aspen Mountain Press

Pairing: m/f

This is a heavily revised and expanded version of an out of print story of the same name. Same characters, same situation but I’ve tweaked it mightily and it’ll be longer.

Skyler has the dubious honor of being my only fully heterosexual main hero to date. I like him anyway.
BLURB:

Ann has safely put Skyler and her juvenile feelings for him behind her. She’d been mad about him in high school but they’d never been more than friends. Then he left early graduation and never looked back.

Eleven years later, Skyler shows up and proves that she’s never gotten out of her system, no matter how much she’s tried. He’s only in town for a short time, but he makes it plain that he’d like to see her during that time.

Can Ann take advantage of the opportunity and experience what she missed in high school without losing her heart to a man who has no intention of sticking around?

Subtly, she drifted farther from him, losing his hand. "But since...?" Gram had been sure to fill her in about his travels of the past few years. He’d been around the world, drinking in every experience he could, while he could.

Randomness

(Original Blog Post: http://www.jetmykles.com/2010/07/randomness/)
I went to 7-11 just now because we were out of Coca-Cola (my main vice other than writing about sex). I pulled into a parking space and on the post in that protects the side of the building, was a sock on the post. Now, the post was waist high and bright yellow. The sock was a tube sock (luckily, I suppose) and clearly used. No holes but there were worn spots. The sock was stretched down over the pole like a cover.

O_O

It made me laugh. Made me wonder why anyone would do that. Where was the other sock? Stuck down someone's pants, perhaps? I couldn't think of why someone would do such a thing. Me being me, I started to think if perhaps it was a sign of a secret society (kind of like Ally's Sinister Starfish). If so, what could the sign mean? Is someone arranging an assignation? Is it a clue to an identity or a place? Or is it a gang/group marking their territory?

I love random stuff like that. It's harmless, hurts no one and nothing, but it sparks the imagination, even if only for a few minutes. That, to me, is a beautiful thing.

EXCERPT - Much Ado from the Encore! Encore! anthology

(Original Blog Post: http://www.jetmykles.com/2010/01/excerpt-much-ado-from-the-encore-encore-anthology/)
Due to be released February or March 2010 from MLR Press

Pairing: m/m

The powers that be at MLR Press asked for it and I, weak as I am, agreed to do a sequel to About Something.
BLURB:

Turns out life as a drag queen isn’t what Shawn thought it would be. He loves the costumes and dressing up, but he’s found he’s better suited to performing from a script than vamping onstage. Too bad Shawn figured this out long after breaking up with Roscoe when his bossy director boyfriend told him he didn’t have what it would take.

Two years later, Shawn may not be wildly happy but he’s content. That is until Roscoe shows up to ask him to reprise his role as Beatrice in Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing. Roscoe is as magnetic as he’s always been and the spark between them is still burning bright.

When Roscoe turns on the charm for a more personal reunion, can Shawn resist? Does he even want to?

*********************************

Roscoe folded his forearms on the bar before him, one of his elbows brushing Shawn’s. “It’s a paying gig. Equity. You could get your card.”

“Aha.” Shawn took a sip of his drink, keeping his eyes on the bar. “I get it.”

“Get what?”

“Why are you showing up, out of the blue, with an offer?”

Some of their audience had drifted away, but Shawn had no doubt those who remained would spread the word.

Didn’t seem like Roscoe cared who heard. “I told you. I need you. Play’s not the same without you.”

“Why that play?”

“I like that play.”

“You going to call Bonnie in California to come play Benedick?”

When there was no answer, he slanted his gaze at the other man.

Roscoe stared at the array of bottles on the mirrored wall behind the bar. He shook his head, not smiling now. “No.”

“What? You don’t think she did great?”

“I do, and you know it.”

“Right.” He took a healthy drink then carefully set his glass down. “But you weren’t sleeping with her.”

Ever aware of his performance, on and off stage, Roscoe gave it a beat, turned to face Shawn then sat back, putting some distance between them. “My offer is sincere, regardless of our past.”

“I’m sure the offer’s sincere. But it doesn’t make anything that happened between us right.”

Over The Top

(Original Blog Post: http://www.jetmykles.com/2010/01/over-the-top/)
I have been accused, on occasion, of writing characters who are over the top. I don't, by the way, at all mind this accusation. I just think it's noteworthy. I like over the top characters. In moderation, of course. Too many or too much can be overwhelming, but if you've got the right outlandish character in the mix, then they tend to keep things interesting.

Take Justin from Just For You. He's nearly a queen. Not quite, but he wouldn't have far to go if he so chose. I could, for instance, see him cross dressing without batting an eye about it. I know he wears clothing that some would consider OTT. But I think Justin was a rather balanced character, actually. His OTT glossed over a very thoughtful man who'd been hurt in the past and chose not to dwell on it and move on.

And Johnnie from Heaven Sent. OMG, isn't he OTT? But he should be. A lead singer in a rock band has to forge ahead and thump people over the head with how very special he and his band are. But, again, the OTT was a gloss. It's his job and he loves it, plays it to the hild 24/7. But once Tyler figured all that out, he found the warm, mushy center underneath and that's what's special about Johnnie. Strange to realize that he's so very loyal but he's really a puppy dog underneath all the glitz. Hmm, let's not tell him I said that, shall we?

Mustn't forget Hell from Heaven Sent either. I figure Hell's been small and cute all his life so he decided early on to work it rather than regret it.  But that doesn't mean that's all he is. The imp rather likes throwing people off and scaring those who think he's a Kewpie doll without a brain. Don't let the lavender hair fool you.

There's also Ki from Tech Support. Again, here's a guy with a forceful personality who takes life by the horns and charges ahead. He sees no particular reason to deny himself or to let what he wants slip through his fingers. Is he an ass about about? Well, yes, sometimes.

And then there's my favorite elf, Radin. Not sure you can get much more over the top and arrogant than he, but he's got the stuff to back it up. He just is that powerful and that charming. I know, I created him LOL

Shows a certain amount of strength to be over the top. Can be annoying, sure and can make your teeth itch, but they get the job done. I think my OTT characters are my alternative to the overpowering alpha males many authors write. Now, let me say with conviction that there is nothing wrong with alpha males. I've read many a story with alpha males and enjoyed them. But, to use one of my favorite phrases, they make my teeth itch. Many times, I can't decide if I want to fuck them or shoot them. It's the nature of the beast. I'm just not great at writing that kind of character. Closest I've gotten are a few elves -- Salin and Krael come to mind -- Michael from Leashed and Drake from Fox and Dragon. But I don't think even they really fit the bill.

So, over the top? Sure. That's my thing and proud of it.

New year, strange year

(Original Blog Post: http://www.jetmykles.com/2010/01/new-year-strange-year/)
I've been published now for five years. I now have 31 published works at three different publishers. Not bad. I'm pretty proud of that.

Since the start, I've had plans. I'm not talking about life plans or even really myself. I've had story plans. Began with the Dark Elves. It wasn't solid, but I did have an idea of sequels when I wrote Taken and Mastered. Once I met Radin, I had things I wanted to do to... uh, with him. Then came the Leashed books. I have plans for Meg and the boys. Okay, Leashed 4 is giving me fits at the moment, but that doesn't mean I don't have a general aim for them. Then, of course, came the boys from Heaven Sent and they proceeded to take over my life.

2005: I wrote about elves and shapeshifters and my first yaoi.

2006: Heaven Sent took over my life but I still got in some elves and shifters.

2007: I tried some new stuff but mainly stuck with the main three series

2008: Even more new stuff but started with pretty much finishing Heaven Sent. Oh yeah, Revelations came along later but I'll always admit that one's an add on. The main arc ended with Genesis.

Now that was strange. And end. It felt good but it was also really weird. People have asked me since if I'll write more about the boys and I did introduce a new sequel series that I still plan to write. But still, it was an end. But the elves and the shapeshifters were still going.

2009: wrote another Heaven Sent because Gretchen wouldn't be denied. Wrote Sursein Judgment and I do hope to write at least one more book in that series. But the big accomplishment was finishing the Dark Elves series.

Again, strange. Another end. To be honest, I was glad to see that particular end. I love that world, but it wrecked me. It felt really good to finally get to the glimmer of end that I saw way back in 2005. Pretty neat.

So now it's 2010 and I've only got one series left. I've still got lots of potential with Leashed, but I'm finding more and more plot and less and less erotic as I'm writing Leashed 4. I'm told that's a good thing by my readers, but Loose Id is an erotic romance publisher. I've got to have some of it. Oh, don't worry, it does have some, at least so far, but there's more.

I grew up on series books. I lived for fantasy books during school. I wouldn't read a book unless it was at least part of a trilogy. So I feel strange now just working on one.

Huh. Guess it's time to get serious about the Indigo Knights and try and think up something new.
